Second Chance Job Fair

Event Details

The Development Corporation is partnering collaboratively with the Friends of North Richmond, Attack Poverty, and the Texas Workforce Commission to host a Second Chance Job Fair on Thursday, October 3rd from 10am to 1pm. The event will be held at the Mamie George Community Center in Richmond.

The job fair is open to the public, but is specifically targeted towards individuals who have barriers to employment due to a criminal background. Employers participating in the job fair are willing to offer a "second chance" to individuals that may have made mistakes in their past, but have taken corrective steps and shown a willingness to find employment. The job fair will provide an opportunity for a face-to-face meeting with employers and may include on the spot interviews.

Benefits of Providing a Second Chance

Providing a second chance to someone with a previous conviction provides many benefits to the employer, employee, and the community as a whole. When roadblocks to employment are removed and individuals are able to support themselves and their families, the benefits are shared.

The Work Opportunity Tax Credit provides real financial benefits to employers hiring individuals who may face a disadvantage in their job seeking efforts. Companies hiring individuals with a previous felony conviction may be eligible to receive up to $2,400 in tax credits. These credits can be used to provide a dollar-for-dollar reduction of federal tax liability.

Studies have shown that employees who are hired after being provided with a second chance are often more motivated to perform highly and displayed more dependability than traditional workers. Nearly 1/3 of the adult working age population has a criminal record, approximately the same number of working age adults with a bachelor's degree. With unemployment rates hovering near 4%, employers are currently experiencing a tight labor market. This job fair intends to connect employers with a largely untapped labor pool possessing many in-demand skills.

Communities improve and thrive when this population is given a second chance at employment. Stable employment is one of the key factors in reducing the recidivism rate and keeping individuals from re-offending. Stable employment opportunities are a key ingredient to providing a safer community and a prosperous local economy. This job fair is intended to help workers facing employment barriers improve their lives by linking them to employers seeking skilled and motivated workers asking for a second chance.
